In March 2021, the municipal council announced, among other things, that the Stadtgalerie Bern is to be closed at the end of the year and the New York Scholarship cancelled – further, more extensive savings plans are in preparation. The Stadtgalerie was founded in 1967 and is of great value to the entire Bernese art scene. The social and cultural restrictions in the wake of the pandemic have hit young artists particularly hard. It is incomprehensible and unacceptable that Bern’s municipal council is cutting back on cultural spending, and therefore on artists.
